Several approaches for the identification and characterization of cells apoptosis are developed and based in majority on structural changes of cell membrane. The scientific team describes new probes allowing an appropriate determination of apoptosis.
Cell apoptosis (programmed death cell), which is of critical importance in cancers, results in changes of the lipid composition of the outer leaflet of the cell plasma membrane.
The present invention describes a new probe for the detection of apoptotic cells. This new fluorescent probe labels the outer leaflet of the cell membrane and responds to apoptotic changes in lipid composition by variation of the relative intensities of its two emission bands.
In comparison with the commonly used Annexin V-based fluorescent kit, this probe provides: (1) faster sample preparation and (2) a ratiometric detection, which allows more precise quantification of apoptosis by fluorescence microscopy, cytometry, or spectroscopy applications.
Potential applications for this invention encompasses all cell apoptosis detection needs, including apoptosis or cancer research, drug screening, or diagnostic uses.
