Description

CONTEXT

This invention is related to the field of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSC). It concerns the use of a novel dye.

The CEISAM Laboratory (UMR CNRS 6230) has developed this new benzodiazaporphyrin-based dye structure, in collaboration with the Lomonosov Moscow State University.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

The developed dye is a modified Zn (di-substituted) trans-benzodiazaporphyrin. This structure allows combining the push-pull structure of porphyrins with a strong light absorption in the NIR region (around 670 nm) usually exhibited by phtalocyanines. The patent also describes the complete synthesis route for two alternatives of the molecule. The new dye has the following normalized absorbance spectrum :

A DSSC device comprising the new dye on TiO2 exhibits the following IPCE spectrum:

DEVELOPMENT STAGE

Lab-scale, functional DSSC devices were successfully obtained (PCE = 3.45%) with the current structure. New dye structures are currently being investigated, with an improved push-pull behavior.

BENEFITS

·         Strong absorption in the NIR region.
·         Push-pull system: efficient charge transfer.
·         Zn-based complex: more abundant than Ru, which is used in standard dyes.

INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS

This invention can be used as a dye for DSSC solar cells.
