Supercapacitors are electrochemical capacitors known to supply an energy density and a power density between those of the conventional batteries and the regular capacitors. The quantity of energy they can store is then between those of the conventional batteries and the regular capacitors. The main advantage is that they can release said quantity of energy faster than conventional batteries.
Currently commercialized supercapacitors are electrochemically charged with the assistance of an external electrical energy source. This is clearly a disadvantage when one wants to use such device for applications such as medical implementable devices.
In the present work, the inventors have developped an enzymatic and sugar-based supercapacitor whose charge is performed by converting a locally available biodegradable biological material intro electrical energy. This way, no external source is required.
Said supercapacitor has been fully assessed on a laboratory scale.
For medical application, the present method is definitely innovative as it offers the benefits of a supercapacitor in terms of energy supply and it doesn’t require the assistance of an external source to charge the system.
Among potential applications, one can use the device to provide energy to implantable medical devices by using locally available biological materials such as blood’s glucose.
