Magnetic field processing have been investigated to influence the microstructure and thus the characteristics of a material, in alternative to thermomechanical treatments largely known in metalurgy. Indeed phase transformations in material, morphology and kinetics can be modified by applying a magnetic field during the fabrication process.
This invention deals with a thermomechanical treatment process and equipment under an intense static magnetic field (up to several tesla). After heating the material one can apply a thermal shock and/or a thermomechanical and/or chemical treatment. During the aforementioned stages of the treatment, the material is subjected to the magnetic field of constant intensity and remains fixed in and relatively to the magnetic field. Contrary to the state of the art techniques the material does not move in the magnetic field to reach the quenching/cooling zone. Other treatments as solution treatments, surface treatments can also be applied .
Adaptable whatever the magnetic field source (permanent magnets, an electromagnet, a supraconducting coil…) ; thermomechanical or chemical or thermal treatment may be conducted ; no displacement of material in the magnetic field (risk of destroying the magnet) ; magnetic field and temperature may vary during the process; material properties may be continuously measured during the treatment
Metallurgical treatment from the laboratory scale (material development) to industrial application on semifinished or finished product.
